Research
1. Marital Satisfaction :
A comparative study in Iran with 226 adults (marital conflict group vs. satisfied group) found that EI scores were significantly higher among couples with marital satisfaction than among couples with marital conflict. (r ≈ 0.529)
(Source : National Library of Medicine – PMC3977397, 2014)
2. Workplace Cooperation :
A meta-analysis of 142 independent samples (n = 36,920 employees worldwide) found that employees with higher EI were significantly more likely to show Organizational Citizenship Behaviors (OCB) → helping colleagues, cooperating, volunteering.
(Source : Miao, Humphrey and Qian, 2017)
3. Relationship Repair (Low Divorce Rate) :
A long-term study (over 3,000 couples observed since the 1990s) found that couples with higher emotional attunement (EI-related skills: empathy, self-regulation, perspective-taking) successfully repaired conflicts in 83% of cases, while emotionally disconnected couples only managed 19% success.
(Source : John Gottman, University of Washington, 1994-2015)
4. EI in Parenting :
In a study if 114 children aged 4 to 6, higher Maternal EI significantly predicted more adaptive child behavior during stress.

Research
1. EI ↔ Self-Esteem :
1n 2021, a study on 490 college students found a strong positive correlation between EI and Self-esteem (r ≈ 0.57). This proves that EI fosters a strong sense of self.
(Source : Relationship between EI and Self-Esteem – Murad, 2021)
2. EI ↔ Happiness :
In a sample of 380 psychology students, researchers found that EI accounted for 46% of variance in subjective happiness.
(Source : National Library of Medicine – PMC10970432, Mar 2024)
3. EI ↔ Stress Management :
In a sample of 505 Spanish adolescents, this research found that EI negatively correlated with both stress and social anxiety.
(Source : National Library of Medicine – PMC6024952, May 2018)
4. EI ↔ Antidote to Peer Bullying :
A study of 1,318 Spanish adolescents found that EI acted as a “protective shield/buffer” against peer bulling by preserving self-esteem during victimization.
(Source : Frontiers in Psychology – PMC7775499, Dec 2024)
5. EI ↔ Job Satisfaction :
A study of 1,475 registered nurses in China found that EI positively correlated with job satisfaction. EI skills facilitated healthy communication, which in turn enriched workplace satisfaction.
(Source : Nursing Open – PMC8186701, Mar 2021)
6. EI ↔ Fights Depression :
100s of studies and meta-analyses proves that EI training reduces depression and boosts mental health. Following are a few studies :
a) Abdellatif et al. (2022) study on 69 patients : 8 weeks of EI Training reduced depression scores significantly.
b) Lloyd et al. (2012) study on 128 adults aged 65+ : EI Training reduced risk of depression.
c) Grases et al. (2023) study on 158 adult volunteers : EI Training improved Immune functioning and reduced depression.
d) 2013 study on Iranian women with breast cancer : Inverse correlation between EI and Depression (p values upto -o.46)
7. EI ↔ Fights Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) :
Since 2009, hundreds of medical studies link Trait EI with Coronary Heart Disease. Following are a few studies :
a) 2009 study on 56 patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) and 56 healthy controls : Lower EI associated with higher CHD incidence.
b) 2013 study on 300 participants spanning over 3 years : Poorer emotional regulation was linked with higher occurrence of Coronary Heart Disease (CHD).
c) 2018 study on 110 heart patients with 110 healthy controls : Men with low EI had a significantly higher risk of cardiovascular disease (Odds Ratio = 0.813). For women, the risk was lower, but still significant.
d) 2025 study on 70 patients with Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) with EI Intervention and 70 controls without EI Intervention: Resilience scores to Heart Failure rose dramatically (~ 37 to 92 immediately post-intervention, and sustained at ~ 87 after 1 month) while the scores of the control group kept on declining.

50-Years of Research
1. IQ Tests are Poor Predictors of Success :
Traditional IQ tests and academic performance are poor predictors of career success. Instead, skills like empathy, self-control, and interpersonal skills (called EI skills) predicts success better.
(Source : American Psychologist David C. McClelland, 1973)
2. EI matters 80% more than IQ :
Cognitive intelligence (IQ) explains about 20% of career growth and success; EI-related factors account for about 80%.
(Source : David McClelland, 1990 and Daniel Goleman, 1995)
3. EI boosts Academic Performance :
European Journal of Psychology of Education (2025) reports that higher EI linked to lower stress, higher motivation, and better learning strategies, reinforcing academic and personal growth.
(Source : European Journal of Psychology, 2025)
4. Goal-directed Motivation :
EI explained nearly 29–41% of variance in self-efficacy. Individuals with higher self-efficacy are found to remain committed in strenuous goal pursuit.
(Source : Shiraz University of Medical Sciences, 2014)
